How Often Do You Smile?

“The biggest threat to your success in life, no matter what you do, is the attitude of indifference. Being positive and passionate about what you do are the biggest factors of attitude. If you love what you do, you will be happy, fulfilled, and energized. It will be illustrated in everything you do…with everyone you meet.” –Gary Sain

Smiles are contagious. When people smile, they appear friendly, welcoming, and approachable. Smiles make us feel good. We have all heard the saying, “beauty is only skin deep.” Well, if you think about it, people who smile actually are more attractive because we are so drawn to their warm personality.

Think about when you are interacting with someone. If they have a negative attitude and are always frowning, they start putting you in a foul mood. Many of us can change the way we are perceived by our actions. Smiling puts forth an optimistic attitude. If you are trying to sell a product or have clients invest in your program, they will be more likely to invest in your brand since you project a confident attitude.

When you approach someone with a frown, they appear to be mad. We initially start picking up on their stress. They become unapproachable and unattractive. You might find it hard to make friends or grow your network. Negative behavior drives high blood pressure and causes unnecessary stress.

After Gary passed away, one of his most memorable qualities was his infectious smile! His smile drew you in. It was warm and welcoming. I believe it truly made him more approachable. As I would look back at old photos, it was rare not to find him smiling. On October 1, 2010, Gary and 500 smiling people took part in setting the Guinness World Record for the biggest smiley face on World Smile Day! This campaign even had a component to raise funds for the charitable organization, Smile Train. Donations were used to provide surgeries for children with cleft lip/palate so they could have a beautiful smile!

Think about how a smile makes you feel. When you meet someone, do you make immediate eye contact and greet them with a smile? If you find yourself in a new environment, do you gravitate towards people who are smiling? When we speak on the phone, we sound happier if we are smiling. A smile is an expression of our mood.

If you are interviewing someone for a job, the candidate who smiles projects a more positive approach. The candidate who displays no emotion or is not engaging, may come across as disinterested and/or unconfident in the position.

A smile is an international symbol that everyone understands. As the famous saying goes,

service with a smile!
